Why can't I read messages in my in-box suddenly?

I am trying to re-read emails from various people that I have kept in my inbox and they are suddenly unavailable to read. When I click on them, the email header comes up but just says "no subject" and the message is apparently addressed to "undisclosed recipients". Does anyone know why this is happening? I haven't been fiddling with the settings.
